Justin Muturi calls for probe into alleged M-Pesa voter bribery claims in Ol Kalou By-election

Former Attorney General Justin Muturi has called for investigations into allegations of voter bribery through mobile money transfers during the Ol Kalou Parliamentary By-election, urging the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and law enforcement agencies to establish the authenticity of the claims.

In a statement posted on his Facebook account on July 16, 2026, Muturi questioned reports that voters had allegedly received M-Pesa transfers described as transport assistance to encourage participation in the by-election.

“I am calling upon IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon and the relevant law enforcement agencies to speak up and investigate this allegations of offensive and outright bribery using mobile money transfer,” Muturi wrote.

He also called on Safaricom Chief Executive Officer Peter Ndegwa to explain the reported transactions, noting that the telecommunications company had been contracted by the electoral commission to provide communications infrastructure and technical support during the poll.

“Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa needs to tell Kenyans why this is happening yet they are contracted by IEBC to provide telecommunications infrastructure and technical support,” he said.

Muturi further stated that if the allegations are confirmed, both the IEBC chairperson and the Safaricom CEO should take responsibility.

“If true we need nothing but resignation of both Ethekon and Ndegwa,” he added.

The allegations surfaced as voting continued in the Nyandarua constituency, where 73,480 registered voters were expected to cast their ballots across 144 polling stations spread across five wards.

Neither the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Safaricom, nor law enforcement agencies has publicly responded to Muturi’s claims or verified the authenticity of the screenshots. It also remains unclear whether any formal investigations have been launched into the allegations.
