Linda Mwananchi announces Meru rally days after deadly Homa Bay violence

Suba South Member of Parliament and Linda Mwananchi movement spokesperson Caroli Omondi has announced Meru as the next stop for the opposition-linked political campaign, days after the movement’s rally in Homa Bay was marred by deadly violence and destruction.

In a post shared on Facebook on Tuesday, August 18, Omondi publicised the movement’s upcoming “MERU LINDA MWANANCHI TOUR,” scheduled for Sunday, August 30, 2026.

The announcement comes just days after the movement’s Homa Bay rally descended into chaos, with rival youth groups engaging in violent confrontations that left two people dead and several properties damaged.

The Meru event is expected to extend the Linda Mwananchi campaign beyond its recent Homa Bay mobilisation as the political movement continues to tour different parts of the country ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The poster shared by Omondi lists August 30 as the date for the Meru tour and urges supporters to engage with the movement through its official platforms.

However, the announcement comes against the backdrop of growing concerns over violence at political gatherings following the Homa Bay incident on Sunday, August 16.

Two people, including a police officer, were confirmed dead following clashes between rival youth groups during the rally in Homa Bay Town. The deceased police officer was reportedly a driver attached to the Nyando Police Command.

The second victim was identified as a Ugandan woman who was allegedly run over by a speeding vehicle amid the chaos.

The violence also resulted in extensive property destruction, with up to six vehicles reportedly set ablaze after their drivers became trapped in the disorder and were unable to move. Armed youths allegedly torched the vehicles, while the unrest also spread to a nearby church.

The Homa Bay violence has since drawn condemnation, with calls for political leaders and their supporters to reject violence and promote peaceful political engagement.

Despite the controversy surrounding the Homa Bay rally, Omondi’s latest announcement signals that the Linda Mwananchi movement intends to maintain its nationwide mobilisation programme, with Meru now lined up as its next major political stop on August 30.
