Ndindi Nyoro officially ditches UDA, joins People’s Party of Kenya

After months of political consultations and deliberations, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has unveiled his 2027 political vehicle by announcing his move to the People’s Party of Kenya and his alignment with the opposition.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday evening, Nyoro said he had formally joined the party and would work with other opposition leaders to chart a new political direction for Kenya.

“Mimi kama Ndindi Nyoro na wafuasi wangu, kutoka leo, nimeingia chama inaitwa People’s Party of Kenya,” Nyoro said.

Nyoro said the decision followed months of reflection, prayer and political consultations as he considered the interests of Kenyans.

“I have been carrying a heavy burden. I have been thinking and praying that in whatever direction I take, politically speaking, the people of Kenya must be the great consideration that I have,” he said.

The Kiharu MP revealed that he had held extensive consultations with leaders across the opposition, including DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua, Martha Karua, James Orengo, Kalonzo Musyoka, Peter Munya, Fred Matiang’i and Edwin Sifuna.

“I have taken time to consult almost all the opposition leaders. I have sat down with Peter Munya, Martha Karua, and James Orengo. You know Sifuna is my brother. I have sat down with Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka,” Nyoro said.

He said his consultations with Matiang’i had stretched for almost a year as he assessed the country’s political direction ahead of 2027.

Nyoro urged Kenyans to consider the People’s Party of Kenya as they assess the political formations and leaders seeking to shape the country after the 2027 elections.

“Mkiangalia viongozi wale watapeleka Kenya mbele from next year, I also ask humbly the people of Kenya, muangalie pia People’s Party. Pia wao wako na viongozi wanaweza shikana mkono na wengine na tukomboe Kenya August of next year,” he said.

The vocal MP, who was once among President Ruto’s staunch defenders, said he had been disappointed by what he described as trial and error following the 2022 election victory.

“I was disappointed that after winning in 2022, we engaged in a lot of trial and error,” he said.

He also declared that he and his allies had left the government and distanced themselves from UDA long ago.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I know you all know we left government a long time ago and dissociated with the wheelbarrow party, the UDA. Vile naona, hata wenye wheelbarrow wenyewe watatoka waiwache,” Nyoro said.

The MP said he would travel to Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Bomet and Kericho to explain his political decisions to residents, particularly in relation to developments within the Kenya Kwanza administration.

“Nitaenda Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Bomet, Kericho. Mnajua kazi nilifanya tukisaidia Rais mwenye amekalia kiti na mkaniambia mimi ni kijana wenu. Nitakuja kuwaeleza kwa nini, after tumefanya hiyo kazi yote, kwa nini tunaenda kidogo tu, Gachagua anarushwa nje. Tunaendelea kidogo, Ndindi Nyoro nje,” he said.

Reflecting on his political journey, Nyoro said his experience had taught him that winning elections and governing are two very different challenges.

“Through the lessons of campaigns and the lessons during governance, I have come to appreciate that it is easier to campaign than to govern,” he said.

Nyoro’s decision to join the United Opposition now puts to rest the months-long debate over his political direction. The big question, however, is whether the Kiharu MP will seek to defend his parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election or set his sights on a different political office.
