Lionel Messi faces England for the first time with FIFA World Cup final spot at stake

England and Argentina will face each other on Wednesday, July 15 night in a blockbuster 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final, with a place in the final against Spain up for grabs.

The showdown at the Atlanta Stadium, adds another chapter to one of football’s fiercest rivalries, but this time all eyes will be on Lionel Messi, who is set to face England in a FIFA World Cup for the first time in his illustrious career.

Although Argentina and England have met five times since the infamous ‘Hand of God’ match in 1986, Messi has never been part of the team, making Wednesday’s clash a historic first for the Argentine captain.

The 39-year-old has once again been central to Argentina’s title defence, leading from the front with goals, assists and match-winning performances as Lionel Scaloni’s side chase back-to-back World Cup crowns.

Standing in their way is an England side determined to end a 60-year wait for another world title.

Led by captain Harry Kane, the Three Lions have impressed throughout the tournament with disciplined defending and clinical finishing, overcoming DR Congo, Mexico and Norway to reach the last four.

Despite the history between the two nations, England have insisted they are focused solely on reaching the final rather than revisiting past controversies.

With Messi, an eight-time Ballon D’or winner, seeking another piece of football history and England aiming to return to the World Cup final, Wednesday’s semi-final promises to be another unforgettable chapter in one of the sport’s greatest rivalries.
