Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has travelled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to represent Kenya at the 49th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Executive Council.
The meeting, scheduled for July 28–29, 2026, will bring together Foreign Ministers from across the continent to deliberate on key issues affecting Africa, including governance, regional integration, peace, institutional reforms and the continent’s engagement with the rest of the world.
Ahead of the Executive Council meeting, Mudavadi will participate in the Ministerial Committee on African Candidatures within the International System, where Kenya serves as a representative for Eastern Africa alongside Uganda.
The committee is responsible for coordinating African support for qualified candidates seeking election to international organizations and institutions.
A key objective of Mudavadi’s visit is to rally support for Kenya’s candidates seeking election to two of the world’s highest judicial bodies.
During bilateral meetings and ministerial consultations, he will campaign for Judge Phoebe Okowa, Kenya’s nominee for the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and Justice Njoki Ndung’u, Kenya’s candidate for the International Criminal Court (ICC), both for the 2027–2036 term.
The Kenyan government says both nominees possess outstanding judicial credentials, extensive international legal experience and a strong commitment to the rule of law.
Their election, according to the government, would strengthen Africa’s representation in global justice institutions while reinforcing Kenya’s longstanding contribution to the development of international law.
On the sidelines of the AU meeting, Mudavadi is also expected to hold a series of bilateral talks with Foreign Ministers and senior government officials from across Africa.
The discussions will focus on strengthening diplomatic and economic ties, promoting regional peace and security, expanding trade and investment cooperation, mobilizing support for Kenya’s judicial candidates, and advancing the African Union’s institutional reform agenda.
Kenya says its participation underscores the country’s commitment to African unity, multilateral cooperation and African-led solutions to continental challenges.
