NCIC calls for intergenerational national dialogue and healing amid rising discontent

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has issued a passionate call for dialogue and unity in the wake of recent nationwide demonstrations that resulted in tragic loss of life, injuries, and destruction of property.

In a press statement released on July 8, 2025, NCIC Chairman Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia expressed deep sorrow over the events of June 25 and July 7, emphasizing that no grievance should ever justify violence or the destruction of livelihoods.

The Commission highlighted the growing frustration among Kenya’s youth, particularly Generation Z, who feel excluded and unheard amid high unemployment, economic hardship, and a lack of trust in institutions. NCIC acknowledged these sentiments as valid and urgent, stressing the need for constructive engagement to address them.

To bridge generational divides, the NCIC launched the “Transgenerational Conversations: The Quest for Better Governance and Accountability” initiative in September 2024. This platform brings together Kenyans from the Silent Generation to Gen Z, fostering mutual understanding and collective reflection on the nation’s challenges.

The Commission has partnered with institutions like the Centre for Multiparty Democracy to ensure these conversations reach all corners of the country.

NCIC called on all stakeholders—government, civil society, faith-based organizations, the private sector, and especially the youth—to participate in these dialogues.

The Commission believes that only through genuine intergenerational engagement can trust be rebuilt and sustainable solutions found.

While affirming the right to peaceful protest, the NCIC condemned both the destruction of property and the use of excessive force by security services.

The Commission urged leaders not to exploit youth frustrations for political gain, but to mentor and empower young people as active nation-builders.

“Kenya’s healing will come not through confrontation, but through genuine conversations,” said Dr. Kobia. “We choose peace. We choose dialogue. We choose Kenya.”
