Robber shot dead by his accomplices during carjacking along Mombasa-Nairobi highway

Police in Kibwezi, Makueni County are pursuing two suspects linked to a botched highway robbery that left one of their accomplices dead after he was accidentally shot during the incident.

According to police reports, the incident occurred at Kambu along the busy Mombasa–Nairobi highway.

The victim, a driver transporting a newly acquired Subaru from Mombasa towards Nairobi, recounted that as he approached the Mutomo area, one of the suspects staged a roadside crossing while posing as a person on crutches.

This forced the driver to slow down, allowing two other accomplices to approach and order him to stop.

In his statement, the injured driver said one of the suspects drew a firearm and fired at him. He narrowly escaped the bullet by instinctively moving his head.

The shot instead struck the accomplice who had been posing on crutches and was forcing his way to sit on the passenger side. He died on the spot.

The driver sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Kambu Sub-County Hospital.

The body of the deceased suspect has been moved to the same facility’s mortuary.

Police say they have noted a rise in similar highway robbery incidents along the Mombasa–Nairobi corridor, with criminals increasingly using deception tactics to stop unsuspecting motorists.

Authorities have launched a manhunt for the two suspects who fled the scene using a motorbike and are urging drivers to remain vigilant as investigations continue.
