A 68-year-old woman has been arrested in Athi River, Machakos County, after detectives discovered she had been running a drug distribution operation hidden behind the appearance of an ordinary senior citizen going about her daily life.
Teresia Mwikali Amukoa was caught by officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit and the Transnational Organised Crime Unit at the main entrance of Mutete Flats, where they had laid an ambush following a tip-off.
She was riding pillion on a motorcycle at the time, looking like someone heading to the market, with no indication of what was hidden in her bags.
A search of her three handbags told a very different story. Instead of groceries, detectives found them packed with packages of cannabis sativa.
The officers extended the search to her residence, where they uncovered even more packages of the banned substance stored in a basket and a clear polythene bag.
Mwikali was arrested on the spot and taken to Muthaiga Police Station, where she is currently being processed ahead of her arraignment in court.
The recovered narcotics have been secured as exhibits.
