Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has spoken out following a viral video of retired boxing champion Conjestina Achieng in distress, firmly denying claims that he turned his back on her and instead pointing to family-related challenges in her recovery journey.
Describing the video as “deeply disturbing,” Sonko said the situation has been emotionally painful to watch, especially amid accusations circulating online.
“It hurts to hear people say I chased her away—that is not true. The last time I saw her was in December when her family came for her with filmmakers. Since then, she has not been brought back.”
He noted that attempts to stay in contact have been difficult, adding that efforts to support the former boxer have repeatedly been disrupted.
“Every time she starts to stabilise under structured care, she is taken away. And when she leaves, everything falls apart again.”
Sonko revealed that he had previously offered financial support and logistical help to the family, but expressed frustration over what he described as a recurring cycle of progress and relapse.
“I have supported them before—facilitation, money, everything. But without consistent care and attention, she ends up back in the same situation.”
In a notable shift, Sonko declared he would no longer take her back under his care, urging her family to assume full responsibility moving forward.
“This time, I will not take her back. Let the family take responsibility and understand why we insisted on proper care.”
Despite his stance, Sonko maintained that Conjestina shows improvement whenever she is under consistent support.
“Whenever she is with us, she gets better. But when she leaves, things fall apart. That is the painful truth.”
He called on the public and well-wishers to keep her in their prayers, noting that he would provide further details in due course.
The video has sparked renewed concern across the country, with growing calls for a coordinated and sustainable intervention to support the once-celebrated boxer.
