Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has announced another political gain for the National Economic Development Party (NEDP) following the defection of Abuthuguchi West Ward MCA Patrick Muthuri Murithi.

In a statement shared on Facebook on Saturday, August 15, 2026, Sonko said Murithi had officially joined NEDP and would seek to defend his MCA seat under the party in the next election.

According to Sonko, Murithi has served as the elected MCA for Abuthuguchi West Ward in Meru County for two consecutive terms, winning both elections on an independent ticket.

“Today, he officially joined NEDP and will seek to defend his seat under our party,” Sonko said.

The former governor described Murithi’s entry into the party as “another victory for NEDP,” highlighting what he portrayed as the party’s growing appeal among elected leaders.

Sonko also said the party had conducted due diligence on Murithi’s record before admitting him into its ranks, citing his leadership and performance as factors considered during the process.

“As usual, we conducted our due diligence on his track record and performance before welcoming him into the NEDP family,” he stated.

Murithi’s move comes only weeks after NEDP welcomed Hon. Kangwana, the elected MCA for Mauwa Ward, in another political development highlighted by Sonko.

Welcoming the Meru MCA, Sonko said the latest addition was part of the party’s broader effort to establish itself around leadership, development and public service.

“Together, we continue building a party based on good leadership, development and service to the people,” Sonko said.

Patrick won his two consecutive terms in office as an independent candidate after dropping out of the UDA primaries in the 2022 general elections.

The latest defection adds to the growing political activity ahead of the 2027 general election, with parties seeking to strengthen their grassroots networks and attract sitting leaders.
