Tanzania’s Vice President, Dr. Emmanuel John Nchimbi, has announced his resignation from politics and retirement from public service, effective September 4, 2026.

In a public notice on his decision, Nchimbi referred to a promise he made to President Samia Suluhu Hassan during his appointment in August 2025, in which he pledged to support her administration for as long as she needed his services and to willingly give way to another person whenever necessary.

Nchimbi said he had formally submitted his resignation to President Hassan, invoking Article 50(2)(c), read together with Article 149(2) of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania.

He said his decision follows his conviction that the Head of State intends to make a change in the vice-presidential position, adding that he was honouring the commitment he made to President Hassan.

Nchimbi thanked President Hassan and the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party for the confidence they had placed in him, as well as Tanzanians for their cooperation during his tenure.

He said he will remain a good citizen and continue serving the country in other capacities as he exits politics and public service.
