Wanga: “Politics should be a platform for unity, not division”

Leaders from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), joined by religious leaders, have issued a renewed appeal for peace and responsibility as political temperatures continue to rise across the country.

Their message comes in the wake of heightened tension during the Linda Mwananchi convoy in Homa Bay, which exposed the fragility of political discourse in the region.

At the climax of a three day crusade organized by the VOSH Church at Mamboleo Grounds in Kisumu, Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathew Owili expressed concern over the current trajectory of political activities.

They warned that unchecked rallies and inflammatory rhetoric could easily fuel hostility, particularly against the government, and undermine national stability.

“Politics should be a platform for unity, not division. Leaders must ensure their words and actions promote peace rather than incite hostility,” Wandayi said, urging politicians to exercise restraint in their public engagements.

Deputy Governor Owili echoed the sentiment, stressing that Kisumu, as a political stronghold, must set an example by fostering dialogue and tolerance. He cautioned that the region’s progress could be derailed if leaders continue to incite animosity.

“Our people deserve development, not conflict. Responsibility must guide our politics, otherwise we risk creating unnecessary divisions that harm communities,” Owili remarked.

ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga, addressing the congregation in Dholuo, reinforced the call by warning citizens against falling prey to political incitement.

She emphasized that peace must remain the cornerstone of democracy, regardless of party affiliations or government positions.

“Let us not be swayed by divisive voices. Peace is the foundation of democracy, and without it, we cannot achieve the Kenya we all desire,” Wanga declared, drawing applause from the audience.

Religious leaders also weighed in, with VOSH Church Archbishop Dr. Winnie Owity urging politicians to shoulder the responsibility of safeguarding unity. She warned that political differences, if left unchecked, could escalate into dangerous divisions among communities.

The joint appeal highlights growing concern over the rising political heat in Nyanza and beyond. Observers note that the timing of the message is significant, as grassroots mobilization intensifies ahead of future contests.

For many in Kisumu, the call for peace is not just a political statement but a moral imperative. Leaders and citizens alike are being reminded that the path to progress lies in dialogue, tolerance, and respect not in hostility or division.
