World Cup heavyweights set for action as England and Portugal begin their campaigns

The 2026 FIFA World Cup continues on Wednesday with four intriguing group-stage matches as Groups K and L get their campaigns underway across the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The day’s action is headlined by England’s highly anticipated clash against Croatia, while Portugal, led by veteran superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, face DR Congo in their opening Group K encounter. Ghana and Panama will also lock horns in Group L, while Colombia begin their campaign against World Cup debutants Uzbekistan.

Portugal will be among the favourites to secure all three points when they take on DR Congo in Houston. Roberto Martinez’s side arrive in North America with a squad packed with experience and quality, spearheaded by Ronaldo, who is chasing yet another piece of World Cup history. The Portuguese are expected to challenge for a deep run in the tournament and will be keen to make a statement from the outset.

Later in the day, all eyes will turn to Dallas where England face Croatia in what is arguably the standout fixture of the opening round in Group L. The encounter rekindles a rivalry that produced one of the most memorable matches of the 2018 World Cup when Croatia eliminated England in the semi-finals.

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic has already highlighted the threat posed by England captain Harry Kane, describing him as one of the world’s most dangerous strikers. Kane arrives at the tournament in prolific form and will be expected to lead England’s charge as they seek a strong start in a group that also features Ghana and Panama.

Meanwhile, Ghana will be looking to make a winning return to the global stage when they face Panama in Toronto. The Black Stars carry the hopes of Africa and know that victory could provide a significant boost in what is expected to be a tightly contested Group L. Panama, however, have shown in previous World Cups that they are capable of upsetting more fancied opponents and will not be taken lightly.

The final match of the day sees Colombia take on Uzbekistan in Mexico City. While Colombia boast World Cup pedigree and are considered favourites, Uzbekistan are making their first-ever appearance at the tournament and will be eager to announce themselves on football’s biggest stage with a positive result.

With England, Portugal and Colombia all beginning their journeys, Wednesday promises another captivating chapter in a World Cup that has already delivered memorable moments. For the teams involved, a winning start could prove crucial as the race for qualification to the knockout rounds gathers momentum.
