A senior police officer is among the suspects who are on the run in connection with the kidnapping and extortion of a man and his wife in Githurai, Nairobi.

According to a report filed at Kasarani Police Station, Inspector Kelvin Mwangi, the Deputy Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Drive In Police Post, is among four suspects who escaped on Thursday, July 30 night after authorities thwarted an attempt to extort the couple of their money.

The report, referenced OB No. 55/30/07/2026, says that it all started at about 3:00 pm on Thursday when the man and his wife, who engage in online business, had gone to Baba Dogo to deliver an Apple Smart Watch to one Mbuvi, who had ordered it online.

Upon arrival, a group of three men suddenly appeared and forced them into a waiting motor vehicle, a white Toyota Axio of registration number KDV 792U.

“The complainant was handcuffed and the vehicle sped off towards Thika Road,” the report says. “They were taken to Shell Roasters along Thika Road, where they were forced to withdraw money.”

The couple managed to withdraw KSh17,000, but the suspects are said to have rejected the amount, demanding KSh1 million instead.

It was at this point that suspects then proceeded to Equity Bank, Githurai Branch, where they ordered the couple to withdraw the said amount.

“They held the wife hostage in the vehicle and released the husband to enter the bank and withdraw the money. Upon entering the bank, the husband alerted the bank teller, who informed the police officers guarding the bank. The officers immediately raised an alarm, and the SPIV team, which was on patrol nearby, responded promptly,” the report adds.

Upon seeing the officers approaching, three suspects fled on foot while the driver sped away with the female victim.

The officers fired warning shots into the air and managed to corner and arrest one suspect –Stephen Okello Obewa. He was escorted to Kasarani Police Station, where, upon interrogation, he admitted that they were five in number aboard the vehicle which belongs to him.

The arrested suspect further stated that he was in the company of the following persons, who escaped from the scene: Kelvin Mwangi, Oliver Baraza, Job Sidiga and Cyrus Onyango.

The aforementioned persons are alleged to be police officers. Police officers recovered five mobile phones valued at KSh120,000, one Apple Smart Watch valued at KSh2,500, items they had stolen from the victims.

The suspect who fled with the woman later released her along Kamiti Road.
