The County Government of Baringo has officially elevated the towns of Marigat, Mogotio and Eldama Ravine to municipality status, marking a significant milestone in the county’s urban development agenda.
The move is expected to accelerate economic growth, improve public infrastructure and enhance service delivery while positioning the three towns as strategic centres for investment, trade and agriculture.
The upgrade comes at a time when the three towns have experienced rapid population growth, expanding business activities and increasing demand for better urban services. Municipal status will enable the towns to access additional development funding and implement modern urban planning aimed at supporting sustainable growth.
Marigat, widely regarded as the fastest-growing town in Baringo County, has emerged as a major agricultural and commercial hub. The town serves as a key market for tomatoes, maize and other agricultural produce from across the county and neighbouring regions. The municipality status is expected to unlock substantial investments in infrastructure, including the installation of modern street lighting, construction of a comprehensive sewerage system and the expansion of the tarmacked road network within the municipality. These projects are expected to improve the business environment, enhance sanitation and ease movement for residents and traders.
Speaking during the official conferment of municipality status, Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi said the elevation of the three towns would attract development financing from the African Development Bank to support infrastructure improvement projects. He noted that improved roads, drainage systems, street lighting and other urban facilities would make the municipalities more attractive to investors while creating employment opportunities for local residents.
Governor Cheboi emphasized that the municipality status is not merely a change in administrative classification but a transformative step that will stimulate economic development, improve public services and raise the quality of life for residents. He urged the people of Marigat, Mogotio and Eldama Ravine to embrace the new status by supporting planned development initiatives and protecting public investments.
Douglas Ayabei, director of warehouses described the elevation of Mogotio to municipality status as a major economic breakthrough. He observed that the town’s strategic location along the Nairobi–Nakuru transport corridor and its close proximity to Nakuru City provide enormous opportunities for business expansion, industrial investment and real estate development. He encouraged residents to take advantage of the new opportunities by investing in enterprises that will improve household incomes and create employment for young people.
Ayabei further noted that municipality status will strengthen urban planning, attract private investors and facilitate better delivery of essential services such as water supply, waste management and improved transport systems. He called upon local entrepreneurs and youth to seize the opportunities created by the town’s new status to transform their livelihoods.
Baringo South Member of Parliament Charles Kamuren echoed the sentiments, saying the elevation of the towns reflects the county’s commitment to inclusive development. He urged residents to work closely with both the county and national governments to ensure that the expected infrastructure projects are successfully implemented for the benefit of future generations.
The upgrade of Marigat, Mogotio and Eldama Ravine is expected to significantly transform the economic landscape of Baringo County. Municipalities enjoy better urban governance structures, improved planning and enhanced eligibility for national and international development funding.
