To promote equity and mutual recognition of academic qualifications across Africa, the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) today convened a three-day workshop in Nairobi aimed at strengthening the integration and recognition of learning achievements across the continent.
The conference has brought together key stakeholders in the education sector, including government officials, university lecturers, technical trainers, and representatives from tertiary institutions.
The discussions are focused on establishing common standards for recognizing academic and technical qualifications, particularly skills acquired outside traditional university systems.
KNQA says the initiative seeks to bridge the gap between higher education and technical or digital learning by ensuring that all forms of education are recognized fairly and without discrimination.
The authority is particularly emphasizing the inclusion of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as well as digital learning programs in national and regional qualification frameworks.
More than ten African countries are participating in the workshop, with delegates exploring ways of harmonizing qualification systems and improving the recognition of certificates issued by different institutions across member states.
Officials believe this move will enhance academic mobility, professional placement, and employment opportunities for graduates throughout the continent.
KNQA, which was established nearly a decade ago, is mandated to coordinate qualification standards in Kenya.
Its responsibilities include evaluating academic credentials, registering assessments, issuing equivalency certificates, and recognizing prior learning acquired through experience or informal education systems.
Organizers say the workshop is intended to ensure that any African citizen who studies or works across borders can have their qualifications recognized and appropriately matched to employment opportunities or further studies.
Participants are also expected to develop collaborative frameworks that will strengthen education quality assurance mechanisms among African nations.
The workshop is scheduled to conclude on May 14, 2026.
