Baby girl killed, mother injured during an elephant attack in Makueni

A one-year-old girl has been confirmed dead following an elephant attack near St. Anne’s Secondary School in Kiboko, Kibwezi West, Makueni County.

Several other people sustained injuries during the incident, including the child’s mother, who was injured while attempting to save her daughter.

The injured have been rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers are currently at the scene, supported by two helicopters in an operation to drive away a herd of elephants that has been roaming the area for several weeks.

Kibwezi West Constituency continues to grapple with increasing cases of human-wildlife conflict, particularly in areas bordering the Chyulu Hills and Tsavo National Parks in Makindu and Kikumbulyu.

Residents have repeatedly raised concerns over frequent elephant invasions, which have resulted in loss of lives, destruction of crops and growing insecurity among communities living near the parks.
