Kirinyaga: Body of woman who jumped into a river with her child recovered

The body of a 29-year-old woman who drowned with her child in River Nyamindi, Kirinyaga County was recovered on Monday by locals.

Residents of Kabiroini Village in Gichugu recovered the body of the deceased, identified as Morren Wangui, about 10 kilometres downstream.

According to the police, the body was first discovered by locals picking grass along the riverbanks.

The body bore many injuries, a result of the raging waters which carried the body downstream, police added.

Wangui’s uncle, Stephen Kinyua positively identified the woman’s body and that of her five-year-old child. He disclosed that the deceased was in the village visiting her grandparents.

The child’s body was reportedly recovered earlier in the day as the family camped along the river in search of their two relatives.

Confirming the incident, Gichugu sub-county police commander Johnson Wachira disclosed the woman was seen by one of the coffee factory workers jumping in the swollen river together with her baby daughter, terming it a suicide mission.

The recovered bodies were transferred to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.
