Eight people were killed and three others injured following a tragic road accident at Murubara along the Mwea–Embu Highway in Kirinyaga County.
According to residents, a speeding parcel truck collided head-on with a tuk-tuk that was carrying farm workers.
Mwea East Sub-County Police Commander Stephen Okal confirmed the incident, stating that the eight victims died at the scene. He said the parcel truck was travelling from Mwea towards Embu when it crashed into the tuk-tuk, which was headed towards Ngurubani.
The tuk-tuk was transporting farm workers from Kimbimbi to the Mwea Irrigation Research area, where they were scheduled to plant rice.
Six of the deceased were passengers in the tuk-tuk, while two were pedestrians who were struck along the roadside.
The parcel truck driver sustained minor injuries and was arrested.
Two of the injured victims were admitted to Kimbimbi Hospital, while another, who suffered serious injuries, was transferred to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kerugoya Mortuary.
Residents alleged that the truck driver lost control while attempting to avoid potholes on the highway, leading to the fatal crash.
