Chelsea confirm Xabi Alonso as new manager, their 6th in four years

Chelsea has confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new head coach, handing the Spaniard a four-year contract, replacing Liam James Rosenior, who was dismissed on April 22, 2026, following a catastrophic run of seven defeats in eight matches.

Alonso will officially begin his role on 1 July 2026 and becomes the sixth permanent manager since the club’s takeover by BlueCo in 2022, underlining a period marked by frequent changes in the dugout and ongoing restructuring at Stamford Bridge.

The announcement came less than a day after Chelsea’s 1–0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final, a result that confirmed the Blues will go trophyless this season.

In a statement released on Sunday, the club welcomed their new head coach, saying:

“Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Xabi Alonso as Manager of the men’s team. The Spaniard will begin his role on July 1, 2026, having agreed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge.” read the statement.

Alonso arrives in west London following a brief spell at Real Madrid, where he departed by mutual consent earlier this year after eight months in charge. His exit followed a challenging run of results and reports of dressing room instability, which contrasted sharply with the strong reputation he built in Germany.

Before his time in Spain, Alonso earned widespread acclaim at Bayer Leverkusen, guiding the club to a historic Bundesliga title and an unbeaten domestic season during the 2023–24 campaign.

Alonso inherits a squad that has struggled for consistency throughout the 2025/26 campaign. Chelsea currently sit mid-table with 49 points, having recorded 13 wins, 13 defeats, and 10 draws from 36 matches.

The team’s inconsistent form has left them unlikely to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, and there is growing concern that they could miss out on European competition altogether.

Speaking after his appointment, Alonso expressed pride and ambition about leading the London club:

“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club.

“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.

There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies,” he said.
