The 2026 Day of the African Child was celebrated at the Kakuma Children Rescue Centre under the theme “Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene for Every Child in Africa,” bringing together humanitarian and development organizations like UNICAF Kenya, UNHCR, BOMA NGO, and Save the Children to advocate for children’s rights.
Commemorated annually on June 16 to honor the students of the 1976 Soweto Uprising, this year’s event featured child welfare activities and a symbolic tree-planting ceremony to promote sustainability.
During the celebration, UNICAF Kenya Country Director Winnie Rachael emphasized that clean water, sanitation, and hygiene are fundamental rights directly impacting education and health, prompting stakeholders to call for stronger collaboration across sectors to ensure all African children can realize their full potential in a safe environment.

For 2026, the focus on water and sanitation aligns wjoith the African Union’s broader Theme of the Year 2026: “Assuring sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems to achieve the goals of Agenda 2063.”
According to The African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC), this theme matters because;
- Millions of children across Africa face daily challenges due to unsafe water, poor sanitation, and lack of hygiene facilities.
- UNICEF estimates that over 190 million children are at high risk from water-related threats, including disease and climate hazards.
- Inadequate WASH services contribute to child mortality, malnutrition, and school absenteeism, disproportionately affecting rural and vulnerable communities.
