President William Ruto has appointed former Energy Cabinet Secretary, Charles Keter, as his advisor on affairs of the Great Lakes Region.

This significant appointment encompasses advising President Ruto on matters pertaining to economics, foreign affairs, and trade, with a specific focus on the Great Lakes Region.

The region, which comprises countries such as Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Zambia, Tanzania, and Uganda, has, in recent years, been marred by civil wars and political instability, especially in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi.

In expressing his gratitude for the appointment, Keter said that the President saw trust and confidence in him before appointing him.

“With humility, I wish to express my gratitude to President William Ruto for appointing me as his Advisor on Great Lakes Region Affairs. I am deeply honored and grateful for the trust and confidence that he has placed in me by appointing me to this role.” he said on X.

“I am genuinely excited about the opportunity to contribute to the development, prosperity, and stability of the Great Lakes Region under his visionary leadership” he stated.

This move represents Keter’s return to the public sphere after an unsuccessful bid for the Kericho governorship in the August 2022 General Election, where he lost to UDA’s Erick Mutai, now the incumbent Kericho Governor.
