Family disputes police account of fisherman’s death in Lake Victoria

‎The family of a 30-year-old fisherman found dead near Koginga Beach on Lake Victoria has disputed police claims that he drowned while fleeing arrest, alleging that his body bore signs of physical trauma.
‎
‎James Okanga, who worked as a fisherman in Homa Bay Town, was found dead on Friday following a multi-agency operation targeting illegal fishing gear.
‎
‎Police, through DCI Commander Jimmy Kisobo, said Okanga jumped into the lake to evade arrest during the operation. Two other occupants of the boat were arrested.
‎
‎However, Okanga’s family has questioned the account, with his brother, Jepherson Otieno, claiming the body had visible bruises suggesting possible assault. His mother, Sarah Anyango, also alleged that blood was coming from her son’s mouth when she saw the body.
‎
‎The family is now demanding a thorough investigation and a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.
‎
‎The circumstances surrounding Okanga’s death remain unclear, amid growing tension among relatives and beach workers over the incident.
