FKF unveils six-point plan to combat hooliganism following Gusii stadium violence

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has announced a comprehensive six-point strategy aimed at restoring order and safety in Kenyan football stadia after violent incidents marred the Shabana versus Gor Mahia match on May 6 at Gusii Stadium.

The clash resulted in at least 72 fans injured-according to FKF-with Gor Mahia estimating over 100 casualties.

In a press briefing, FKF CEO Harold Ndege condemned the violence and confirmed that investigations are underway in collaboration with the police.

“We are reviewing match reports and judicial bodies will take appropriate action,” he said, while refraining from specifying a timeline for the inquiry’s conclusion.

The six measures outlined by FKF to prevent future hooliganism include:

  1. Fan Education: FKF plans to collaborate with clubs and media to run civic education campaigns promoting safety, restraint, and proper matchday conduct.
  2. Stewards’ Engagement: Training programs will be rolled out for stewards in both the FKF Premier League and National Super League to enhance fan management and stadium security.
  3. Security Policy Development: FKF is drafting an official matchday security policy, already shared with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), to guide consistent security management across all league matches.
  4. Matchday Oversight: FKF will assume responsibility for organizing security at high-risk matches to ensure professionalism and consistency, supplementing the traditional role of home teams.
  5. Club Licensing Enforcement: Regular stadium inspections will ensure clubs comply with infrastructure and safety standards outlined in club licensing regulations, addressing concerns raised over Gusii Stadium’s suitability.
  6. Police Collaboration: FKF will form a multi-agency security task force with police to combat hooliganism across football activities nationwide.

Ndege urged fans to embrace sportsmanship and peace, emphasizing football’s unifying role. Some security measures will be implemented immediately, starting with the upcoming Mashemeji Derby between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards on May 11 at Kasarani.

This initiative follows repeated incidents of hooliganism in Kenyan football, with FKF previously sanctioning clubs for violent conduct and match abandonments. The federation’s renewed focus highlights the urgent need to safeguard the sport’s integrity and fan safety.
