Four suspected Nyayo House cartels arrested

Police have arrested four employees at Nyayo House, Nairobi over bribery allegations in the passport application saga.

The four were soliciting bribes from Kenyans seeking immigration services at the department’s headquarters, Nyayo House.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) arrested the suspects after camping at the busy public office for several days.

“On 25th August 2023 officers from the DCI – Immigration conducted the above operation. The objective of the operation was to arrest brokers who take advantage of members of the public and solicit bribes for otherwise free services,” DCI noted in a statement.

The suspects are being held at the Central Police Station, as officers continue with investigations before arraigning them in court.

This was after Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki during a press briefing acknowledged that there was corruption at the Immigration offices.

Kindiki also declared Nyayo House a crime scene and promised to clean up the mess at the Immigration Department for Kenyans to access services at the office without struggle.

Interior CS was reacting to a public outcry concerning the inefficiency in the processing of passports and other travel documents at the Immigration offices.

At the same time, Immigration employees were being blamed for using excuses such as faulty printing machines, and a shortage of booklets in denying citizens vital services at the offices.
