How sniffer dog tracked coffee thief for 1 km, leading police officers to house of notorious suspect

A man, who is notorious for stealing coffee from local farmers in Kitaliza area of Kassanda District, central Uganda, has been arrested in a dramatic fashion after police employed the services of a sniffer dog.

It all started on March 31, when Kayima Madi made a report at Kiganda Police Station that his coffee had been stolen.

The Mityana K-9 Unit team was conducted to respond to the report. The team went to the scene of crime and introduced a sniffer dog.

Expertly, the canine is said to have picked up the scent of the unknown suspect.

“It [sniffer dog] tracked for about 1km and led the team to the house of one Kanyikera Raphael of Bugayo Cell, whereby up-on-search, an exhibit of fresh coffee was recovered, which was identified by the complainant as his coffee. The suspect confessed that indeed, it was not his coffee, but “someone just brought it because he wanted to buy,” the Uganda Police Force reports.

The suspect, however, refused to reveal who brought the coffee to him and was handed over to Kiganda Police Station for further investigation and management.

In the same way, the K9 Unit in Bushenyi District, Western Uganda, also responded to the scene of stealing from a motor vehicle reported at Bushenyi Central Police Station.

The sniffer dog led police officers where the number plate was of Agaba Alvin, who just came back from prison over the same case of stealing from the motor vehicle.

Upon seeing the dog, Agaba took off “at a terrible speed into the forest.”
