Juja: Mukuyuini, Athi residents now using mkokoteni as means of transport

Residents of Mukuyuini and Athi villages in Juja, Kiambu County, are up in arms with their leaders over the deplorable state of roads.

The irked locals say that the roads full of neglected potholes and gullies have been rendered impassable, especially during the ongoing rainy season.

Currently, vehicles that have been plying the Athi-Juja Farm Road have stopped operations over the pathetic state of the road leaving residents with only one option – using carts (mkokoteni) as their new mode of transport.

For months, the derelict state of the road is said to have paralyzed economic activities in the area that is known for massive production of food, excavation of quarry materials and all manner of businesses.

Residents decried that they have been landlocked and can no longer go about their activities as the bad roads have nearly stalled everything.

Speaking to journalists after demonstrating in the area, the locals said they have numerously raised concerns over the bad state of their roads but their leaders have only been making fake promises.

Bearing the brunt are people in the transport business who have, before they stopped operations, incurred huge losses after their vehicles and motorbikes suffered frequent mechanical problems.

They said that due to the sorry state of their roads, frequent accidents have also occurred leaving many injured.

A tour in the area revealed a run-down state of roads filled with potholes, mud and gullies.

Journalists had to leave their vehicle kilometers away as it could not penetrate through the dilapidated stretch.

Furious locals called on elected leaders to be responsible and wake up from their deep slumber and heed to their campaign promises to end their intolerable suffering.
