Karua urges ICC to probe political violence allegations in Kenya

People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua has urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to pay closer attention to Kenya’s political environment amid allegations of violence targeting opposition figures.

Karua, speaking for the United Opposition, said the recent incidents witnessed at political gatherings raised questions about the government’s responsibility to protect citizens and political actors.

She asked the ICC prosecutor to assess information emerging from the country and determine whether it provides grounds for renewed scrutiny of President William Ruto.

According to Karua, any evidence linking state officials or individuals acting with the knowledge or support of authorities to systematic attacks should be subjected to international investigation.

She also called for a review of the earlier ICC proceedings involving Ruto, arguing that fresh evidence, if established, should be considered in determining whether the matter can be revived.

Ruto was among Kenyan suspects charged by the ICC over crimes against humanity arising from the 2007/08 post-election violence. The charges included murder, persecution and deportation or forcible transfer of population.

The ICC case against Ruto was terminated in 2016 after prosecutors said there was insufficient evidence to proceed. The prosecution had also raised concerns over alleged witness interference. The case was not, however, determined on the merits through a full trial.

Karua further turned her attention to the 2027 General Election, calling on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to ensure the electoral process is transparent and credible.

She said political competition should not be accompanied by intimidation or violence, urging Kenyans and political leaders to reject the use of organised groups to disrupt rallies or prevent opponents from campaigning.

Karua maintained that citizens must be free to participate in political activities without fear, saying the next election should be determined by voters and competing ideas rather than violence.
