The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has assured motorists and other road users of safe and uninterrupted travel ahead of the anticipated El Niño rains.

Speaking during an inspection of the Kamuwongo–Kandwia Road in Mwingi North, Kitui County, KeNHA Board Chairperson Winfrida Ngumi said the authority has put in place mitigation measures to prevent disruptions, particularly at bridges and other vulnerable sections of roads.

Ngumi said measures have specifically been put in place at Mbakini Bridge, which has raised concerns among residents and motorists over the possibility of transport disruption along the Thika – Garissa Highway during heavy rains.

KeNHA Director General Daniel Cheruiyot said the authority is currently undertaking 175 kilometres of road projects worth 17.5 billion shillings across the three Ukambani counties.

Cheruiyot also assured residents that all pending bills relating to the projects have been settled, paving the way for contractors to continue with the works.

He said the ongoing projects are expected to be completed within the agreed timelines.
