Kenya Power has restored its prepaid payment platforms, allowing customers to once again purchase electricity tokens and pay their bills following an earlier system outage that left many unable to access the services.
In a customer alert issued at 3.35pm on Thursday, July 30, 2026, the utility confirmed that all prepaid payment platforms were back online.
“We wish to inform our customers that all our prepaid payment platforms have been restored and customers are now able to buy tokens,” Kenya Power stated.
However, Kenya Power cautioned that the high volume of transactions following the restoration is causing delays in token delivery, and said it is working to clear the backlog as quickly as possible to ensure real-time delivery.
The payment platform failure had come less than a day after a widespread blackout plunged large parts of the country into darkness.
The power outage, first reported at around 8.30pm on Wednesday, affected Nairobi, the Coast, Mt Kenya, and parts of the Central Rift, while the North Rift and Western regions remained on supply. Kenya Power attributed the blackout to a technical disturbance in the national grid.
The utility restored power supply in phases through the night, energising the Lanet, Naivasha, and Juja Road substations by 10.11pm before progressively returning other regions to service, with full restoration confirmed by 2.00am on Thursday.
Kenya Power apologised for the inconvenience caused by both the blackout and the subsequent payment system outage.
