The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) today took a significant leap in grassroots sports development, unveiling “Pass It Back” – an innovative programme that marries non-contact rugby with crucial life skills training for young Kenyans aged 11 to 16.
This exciting initiative, a strategic partnership between KRU, ChildFund Rugby, and Menzies Aviation, is backed by a substantial sponsorship exceeding USD 90,000/- spread over the next two years.
Kenya now proudly joins a growing global network of nations leveraging the power of rugby to cultivate stronger, more inclusive communities.
The “Pass It Back” programme will introduce World Rugby’s T1 non-contact format, providing a safe, structured, and inclusive environment for participants to develop confidence, teamwork, and invaluable leadership skills.
The inaugural rollout, aptly named “Playing for Equality,” will spearhead efforts in advancing gender equity, inclusion, and leadership development. With over 250 youth expected to participate, the programme is committed to achieving more than 50% female involvement, a progressive step for youth sports in the country.
Speaking at the official signing ceremony, KRU CEO Thomas Odundo emphasized the initiative’s role in strengthening the development pathway.
“Investing in the next generation is how we build a lasting legacy and position rugby as a platform for personal and community growth,” he stated, highlighting the partnership with ChildFund Rugby as key to long-term sustainability.
The KRU will be at the helm of local implementation, including training youth coaches aged 16 to 25. These coaches will facilitate engaging 90-minute sessions that seamlessly blend rugby fundamentals with vital life lessons, empowering youth to navigate daily challenges and build resilience.
KRU Chairperson Harriet Okach passionately underscored the broader impact of “Pass It Back,” noting it “offers knowledge, instills values, and imparts life-changing skills.” Her call to all stakeholders to embrace rugby as a tool for transforming lives resonates deeply with the spirit of the programme.
Mohammed Tambi, General Manager of Menzies Aviation Kenya, reaffirmed their commitment, stressing that their investment transcends mere sponsorship, aiming for a “meaningful, lasting impact on future generations.”
The launch in Kenya also coincides with “Pass It Back’s” 10-year global anniversary, a testament to its proven success in utilizing sport as a powerful vehicle for social development worldwide.
This initiative promises to be a game-changer for Kenyan youth, fostering not just rugby talent but also well-rounded, empowered individuals ready to contribute positively to their communities.
