Lamu Port receives largest vessel ever to dock in East and Central Africa

The Port of Lamu has marked a major milestone after receiving the largest ship ever to dock in the East and Central Africa region, signaling the growing importance of Kenya’s newest deep-sea port in regional and international trade.

The massive vessel, MV Baltimore, measuring 369 meters in length, arrived at the Port of Lamu from the Port of Salalah in Oman.

Speaking after the vessel docked, the Executive Manager of the Port of Lamu, Abdulaziz Mzee, said the successful arrival of the giant ship demonstrates the rapid progress the port has made since its official opening.

According to port officials, more than 110 ships have docked at the Port of Lamu since the beginning of 2026, reflecting a steady rise in maritime activity and cargo handling operations.

The Port of Lamu, which is part of the larger LAPSSET Corridor project, was designed to ease congestion at the Port of Mombasa while opening new trade routes for Kenya and neighboring countries.
