Mali secured their spot in the CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations final with an impressive 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso in Tuesday’s semi-final in Casablanca.
The young Eagles delivered a goal in each half to seal their place in Saturday’s championship match, where they will face either Morocco or Côte d’Ivoire.
Soumaila Fané opened the scoring in the 42nd minute with a stunning strike from outside the box, leaving the Burkina Faso goalkeeper with no chance.
Despite a spirited response from the Stallions, Mali doubled their advantage in the 74th minute when Mahamadou Traoré headed home from a pinpoint cross by Fané.
The match at Stade Larbi Zaouli was intense and physical, but Mali’s well-organized defense proved too difficult for Burkina Faso to break down.
The Baby Stallions created several opportunities, but failed to capitalize, while Mali displayed composure and tactical maturity throughout the game.
Burkina Faso’s frustration boiled over in the second half, as they ended the match with nine men after Ali Koné and Alassana Bagayogo both received second yellow cards.
This victory marks Mali’s return to the U-17 AFCON final for the first time since 2017, when they claimed the title. The West Africans are now just one step away from reclaiming continental glory.
Burkina Faso will now compete in the third-place playoff against the loser of the second semi-final, also scheduled for Saturday. Mali will be the favorites but have to prove they can beat the hosts if they want to lift the trophy.
