Marua Interchange becomes symbol of Central Kenya’s infrastructure shift

The Marua Interchange is rapidly emerging as one of the most significant transport infrastructure projects in Central Kenya, symbolising the transformation taking place along the wider Kenol–Sagana–Marua Road corridor.

Located along the strategic Great North Road and Trans-African Highway No.4 that connects Cairo, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Lusaka, Gaborone and Cape Town, the interchange sits at a critical point linking the Port of Mombasa to Ethiopia and the wider Horn of Africa through Nairobi, Isiolo and Moyale.

Motorists using the Kenol–Marua corridor have for decades endured severe congestion, long travel hours and frequent accidents caused by rising traffic volumes and limited road capacity. At peak periods, travellers heading to Nyeri and Central Kenya would spend up to five hours on journeys that should have taken far less time.

Today, that reality is steadily changing.

Designed to ease traffic flow and improve safety, the interchange features a 20-metre single-span bridge, a roundabout and five traffic loops labelled A, B, C, D and E.

Road marking, drainage works and guardrail installations have already been completed, with only landscaping and installation of streetlights remaining before final completion.

The interchange forms part of the larger 84-kilometre Kenol–Sagana–Marua Road expansion project under the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), one of the country’s most strategic transport upgrades.

The wider highway project, particularly Lot 2 covering 36 kilometres from Sagana through Kibingoti, Kibirigwi and Karatina to Marua, had initially been scheduled for completion on October 18, 2023 before stalling alongside several national infrastructure projects.

In 2025, the government revived the project through a securitisation financing model aimed at unlocking funds for more than 500 stalled road projects nationwide. The financing approach uses future cash flows to raise upfront contractor payments without increasing pressure on public debt.

Residents along the corridor say the impact of the interchange and road expansion is already visible.

The dual carriageway leading into Karatina town, part of the ongoing road expansion aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity.

Peter Kananu, a resident of Karatina in Mathira Sub-County, says congestion has reduced significantly since construction works intensified.

“First, we thank the government for building this road. This area used to have a lot of traffic. But from the day construction started, traffic eased immediately except inside Karatina town, where it still builds up a bit, especially on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays,” he said.

According to Kanunu, travel time between Nairobi and Central Kenya has reduced from nearly five hours to about two hours in some cases.

“We used to take around five hours to get to Nairobi. Now, in two hours, you will be there. So we are truly thankful,” he added.

Beyond improving mobility, the interchange is expected to strengthen regional trade by easing movement for cargo transporters travelling between Nairobi, Nyeri, Isiolo and Northern Kenya, while also improving logistics efficiency along the Horn of Africa trade corridor.

The project has additionally created employment opportunities for skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers, boosting livelihoods for communities living along the route.

Residents also say the scale and modern design of the Marua Interchange have transformed the area into a landmark destination.

“When you go to a place like Marua, you won’t even believe you are in Kenya. It has been built so well that when you stand there, you feel like you’ve reached another level,” Kanunu said.

As final works continue, the Marua Interchange is increasingly being viewed not just as a road project, but as a gateway to faster movement, safer travel and deeper regional integration across Central Kenya and beyond.
