MPs approve motion to remove Agriculture CS Linturi from office

Members of Parliament (MPs) have approved a motion of impeachment against Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi.

This was after a total of 149 members of parliament (MPs) on Thursday May 2, 2024 voted in support of removing the Agriculture cabinet secretary (CS) Mithika Linturi from office.

During the Thursday morning session, 149 MPs voted in support of Linturi’s impeachment, 36 opposed while three abstained.

Consequently, an 11-member committee will be formed to investigate the matter and file a report within ten days.

The impeachment motion was tabled by Bumula MP Jack Wamboka who is seeking the removal of Linturi over gross misconduct and violation of Kenya’s constitution.

This was after the Agriculture CS was linked to the distribution of fake fertiliser in the country.

Once National Assembly approves the established committee, Agriculture CS Linturi will be allowed to appear before the members and defend himself against accusations raised.

The 11-member team will then be mandated to dismiss the case if evidence presented before them is insufficient, or vote in favour to impeach Linturi if the evidence is substantiated.

“If a resolution requiring the President to dismiss a Cabinet Secretary is supported by a majority of the Members of the National Assembly, the Speaker shall promptly deliver the resolution to the President,” reads Section 66(8) of National Assembly Standing Order.

If the motion sails through in parliament, Linturi will become the first close ally of President William Ruto to be kicked out of cabinet.
