Police raid home of Peru’s President over her collection of luxury watches

Police on Saturday raided the home of Peru’s President Dina Boluarte as investigations into her luxury watch collection progresses.

About 40 police officers raided Boluarte’s home in Peru’s capital Lima as part of a probe into corruption allegations against her.

The early Saturday morning operation was led by officers from the prosecutor’s office in collaboration with police officers.

According to images broadcast on their national television Latina showed the officers breaking into home using a sledge hammer.

The President was reportedly not at home during the raid. Apparently, the search and seizure operation was authorized after questions over how she afforded different luxury watches she was seen wearing at multiple events.

Responding to critics, President Boluarte claimed they were products of her hard work since the age of 18 years. Speculations however did not die down as it is bizarre for a government official with a KSh2 million monthly salary.

Attorney General Juan Villena in particular criticized the President for failing to appear in court for two weeks to explain how she purchased the three expensive watches she was seen donning.

She is also expected to undergo an asset audit over the past two years to flag any irregularities.

Boularte rose to power as vice president in July 2021 and later became President in December 2022.
