Police recover 56 stolen livestock in Meru as hunt for suspects intensifies

Security officers in Tigania East, Meru County, have recovered dozens of livestock reported stolen, in a successful operation that has brought relief to affected farmers and renewed focus on livestock theft in the region.

In a statement shared on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, the National Police Service confirmed that officers recovered forty-nine head of cattle and seven goats following a coordinated security operation in the area.

According to the police, officers launched an extensive search targeting suspected escape routes and grazing zones believed to have been used by the thieves to move the stolen animals.

“The team conducted coordinated operations along suspected escape routes and grazing areas, leading to the successful recovery of all the stolen livestock,” the police said.

Authorities added that the recovered animals were positively identified before being handed back to their rightful owners, marking a major breakthrough in efforts to combat livestock theft, which remains a persistent challenge in some rural parts of the country.

Police have since intensified efforts to track down those behind the theft, with patrols and surveillance heightened across Tigania East and surrounding areas.

“Efforts to apprehend the suspects are ongoing, with enhanced patrols and surveillance mounted across the area,” the statement added.

The successful recovery has been welcomed as a significant boost to local farmers, many of whom rely heavily on livestock as their primary source of income and livelihood.

Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the National Police Service urged members of the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement by sharing information that may help in ongoing investigations.

“The National Police Service remains committed to safeguarding lives and property. Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or via emergency numbers 999 or 911,” police stated.

The service also encouraged wananchi to use the #FichuaKwaDCI toll-free line and WhatsApp reporting channels to confidentially provide information that could assist in arresting the suspects.
