Prof. Ayub Gitau appointed University of Nairobi’s 9th Vice-Chancellor

The University of Nairobi Council has appointed Prof. Ayub Njoroge Gitau as the institution’s 9th Vice-Chancellor, replacing Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson, who was serving as Acting Vice-Chancellor following the exit of former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama.

The appointment was announced following a special council meeting held on May 14, 2026, which also saw Prof. Josiah Omollo Aduda appointed as Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Finance, Planning and Development.

Council Chair Chacha Nyaogotti said the appointments mark a new chapter for the University.

“These appointments mark a new chapter for the University of Nairobi as we strengthen leadership for excellence, innovation, and global competitiveness,” he stated.

The council also recognised the service of Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson, who has served as Acting Vice-Chancellor for the last one year, commending her dedication, stability, and commitment to institutional continuity during the transition period.

Prof. Gitau, an engineer, researcher and academic leader with more than 35 years of experience, takes over the university leadership after months of uncertainty.

He previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs, where he played a key role in academic reforms and the university’s digital transformation agenda.

Speaking after his appointment, Prof. Gitau said the university would focus on strengthening research, innovation and partnerships while enhancing its global competitiveness.

“The University of Nairobi has a proud legacy of scholarship, innovation and service to society. As we navigate a rapidly changing global environment, our focus will remain on strengthening academic excellence, advancing research and innovation, nurturing talent, expanding partnerships and positioning the University as a globally competitive institution,” he said.

Meanwhile, Prof. Aduda brings more than 25 years of experience in academic leadership, governance and strategic planning, having previously served as Dean of the School of Business and Chair of the Department of Finance and Accounting. He is expected to lead efforts aimed at improving financial sustainability and supporting the university’s long-term development agenda.
