Raila condemns brutal killing of Albert Ojwang, calls for justice

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday June 10, 2025 condemned the killing of influencer Albert Ojwang over a controversial social media post.

Raila issued a statement on June 10, 2025 while in Bangkok, Thailand as he expressed deep shock and anger to what he termed as “senseless death” under deeply troubling circumstances.

The ODM leader noted that nobody knows who gave orders for Ojwang to be arrested and to be brought to Central police station where he died.

“So far nobody knows who gave orders for Mr. Ojwang to be arrested and ferried all the way to Nairobi and yet that person should be answering to Kenyans,” he stated.

Odinga described Ojwang’s death as one of the disturbing trends of brutality while in police custody.

He warns that such incidents undermines public trust in the police and the legitimacy of the state.

“When citizens can no longer tell the difference between the two forms of injustice -police injustice and mob injustice we are staring at the reality failure as a nation,” read part of Raila’s statement.

In addition, the ODM leader called for immediate action by the National Police Service, urging them to conduct a thorough, transparent and credible investigation into Ojwang’s death.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja had ordered the suspension of senior police officers at the Central Police Station, in Nairobi following the death of Albert Ojwang.

This was after public pressure for accountability on the tragic death of social media influencer Albert Ojwang while in police custody at the station.

In a statement dated June 8, 2025, the police IG explained that the suspension of officers at the station would help in facilitating impartial investigations by IPOA.
