President William Ruto has announced plans to dual the 23.5-kilometre Kiambu Road corridor from Muthaiga to Kiambu and its bypasses through a project valued at 221 million US dollars (about KSh30 billion), saying the investment will improve transport and unlock economic growth across the Nairobi Metropolitan region.
The President made the announcement on Monday, June 29, while commissioning the KSh3.8 billion Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover in Nairobi.
Speaking during the event, Ruto said the Kiambu Road expansion forms part of a wider programme aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving movement within the capital.
“To the north of the corridor, we are preparing the dualling of the 23.5-kilometre Kiambu Road corridor from Muthaiga to Kiambu and its bypasses in a USD221 million, approximately KSh30 billion investment. This project will unlock faster movement of people and goods while opening Nairobi’s metropolitan region to greater investment, housing and commercial development,” he said.
The President noted that the newly commissioned flyover is designed to address one of Nairobi’s busiest traffic junctions, reducing travel time while improving safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
“For too long, congestion has imposed a heavy cost on our economy and on the daily lives of our people. The Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover is a strategic investment in the efficiency, productivity and competitiveness of our capital city,” Ruto said.
He added that the KSh3.8 billion project will improve the movement of people and goods along one of Nairobi’s busiest transport corridors.
Ruto further outlined several ongoing infrastructure projects intended to modernise the city’s road network. He said the KSh3 billion Upper Hill–Kenyatta Avenue Viaduct is now 60 per cent complete and is expected to ease access into the Central Business District once finished.
He also said the government has begun upgrading State House Road through a KSh1.6 billion project, while KSh3.9 billion is being invested in access roads leading to Talanta Sports City as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The President also revealed that construction of a modern traffic management centre valued at 60 million US dollars (about KSh7.9 billion) is already underway and will help improve traffic flow and mobility across Nairobi.
He said the combined investments are intended to eliminate long-standing transport challenges that have slowed the city’s growth and strengthen Nairobi’s position as a regional business hub.
