Strathmore University students engage Kenya’s foreign policy

Strathmore University today hosted young Kenyans for the second leg of the Youth Foreign Policy Dialogues, a series convened by the State Department for Foreign Affairs in partnership with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS). The dialogue is aimed at deepening youth understanding of, and engagement with, Kenya’s foreign policy. It followed an earlier session held at the University of Nairobi on 9th June, and forms part of the broader Foreign Policy Mashinani Initiative, which seeks to bring foreign policy closer to citizens at the grassroots level.

The engagement’s centerpiece was a presentation on “Kenya’s Foreign Policy” by Mr. Mustafa Ibrahim, Deputy Director General for Policy, Research and Strategic Analysis at the State Department for Foreign Affairs. He walked participants through how Kenya’s foreign policy is shaped and implemented in practice. Participants engaged candidly, reflecting on where youth voices have historically been missing from these conversations and what Kenya’s foreign policy means tangibly to them.

Participants were also introduced to the upcoming Global Trust Summit, set for 22nd–23rd October 2026 in Nairobi, through a presentation by Mr. Eugene Otieno, Strathmore University Student Council President, who outlined the Summit’s agenda, theme, and significance, with a focus on the role of youth.

The day also featured an information session on Youth, Peace and Security (YPS), introducing participants to the YPS Agenda and UN Security Council Resolution 2250. The session was led by Ms. Diana Ouma, Executive Director of Youth 4 SDGs Kenya; Mr. Edgar Mkalla, Kenya Youth Delegate to the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR); and Mr. Felix Orwaka, Co-Chair of the Kenya Coalition on Youth Peace and Security (KCYPS).

The day was brought to a memorable close with a surprise performance by the Strathmore University Band, alongside remarks from Vice Chancellor Prof. Vincent Ogutu.
