A total of 330 youths in Elgeyo Marakwet County have graduated from a digital skills training programme aimed at equipping them with essential knowledge and practical skills to participate in the growing digital economy.
The youths were trained through the DigiTruck programme, an initiative implemented by Computer For Schools Kenya to provide digital literacy opportunities to communities and individuals with limited access to technology and digital training.
The programme has equipped the beneficiaries with practical knowledge on the use of computers, digital technologies and other online tools that can be applied in education, business, employment and entrepreneurship.
Speaking during the DigiTruck graduation ceremony, Huawei Kenya Director for Policy and Partnerships Adam Lane said digital skills are increasingly becoming essential as technology continues to transform the way people work, communicate and conduct business.
The training is also expected to help young people take advantage of emerging opportunities in the digital space, including online work, entrepreneurship and access to information and services.
Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy, Eng. John Tanui, and Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Opiyo Wandayi, also highlighted the importance of investing in digital literacy as part of efforts to prepare young people for the future.
The leaders said programmes such as DigiTruck are playing a critical role in bridging the digital divide by bringing technology and skills closer to communities that may otherwise have limited access to digital learning opportunities.
The graduation marks an important milestone for the 330 youths, who are now expected to use the skills acquired to improve their livelihoods and explore new opportunities created by technology.
The programme is also seen as part of wider efforts to ensure that young people in rural and underserved areas are not left behind as Kenya continues to embrace digital transformation and build a knowledge-based economy.
