Wajir County is completing preparations to host Kenya’s 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations. The selection of the venue marks the first time the national event will be held in the region since independence, reflecting the government’s policy of rotating national holiday celebrations across different counties.
The centerpiece of the event is the new Wajir Stadium, which will host the official ceremonies. Commissioned in February at a cost of KSh 900 million, the project has reached a 90 percent completion rate within a 4-month construction timeline.

Government and county officials have finalized structural assessments to ensure the facility is ready for the scheduled military parades and public attendees.
The event coincides with a wider development tour by President William Ruto, who is scheduled to launch and inspect several public infrastructure projects across the county.
In Wajir South Constituency, the President will commission the Habaswein town power mini-grid alongside a last-mile electricity connectivity project intended to expand grid access for local residents.
Road infrastructure evaluations are also on the itinerary. The President is slated to inspect ongoing construction works on town roads in both Habaswein and Griftu.
Additionally, the newly constructed Wajir State Lodge has been completed in readiness for the national celebrations and will serve as the official residence during the executive visit to the region.
