Who is Erastus Edung Ethekon, man poised to be the new IEBC Chairperson?

Erastus Edung Ethekon was on Thursday, May 8 nominated as the next Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson by President William Ruto.

As required by the Constitution, Ethekon’s name has since been forwarded to the National Assembly for consideration and approval, in accordance with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act as well as the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act (Chapter 7F, Laws of Kenya).

But who is Erastus Edung Ethekon?

Prior to his nomination to head the country’s electoral commission, Ethekon has been practising as a Consultant Partner at the Northern Consulting Solution and E. Ethekon & Co. Advocates (2004-Present).

He started his career in 2007 as a Programs Management Specialist at the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), serving in that role up to 2015.

In 2016, he switched roles and became the Programme Advisor at the UNDP, Regional Service Centre for Africa & Africa Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Ethekon also worked as a Program Coordinator & Chief Technical Advisor on Area Based Development Programming in Kenya, UNRCO (2015-2018).

In 2018, Ethekon was appointed the County Attorney in the Office of the County Attorney in the County Government of Turkana, a position he served for six years (2018-2024).

Ethekon’s academic qualifications

  1. Master of Laws (LLM) Degree in Oil, Gas & Energy Law from the University of Derby in the United Kingdom (2016),
  2. Master of Science (MSc.) Degree in Project Management from the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom (2013),
  3. Master of Arts (MA) Degree in Peace Conflict & Development Studies from Universidad Joume tin Valencia Spain (2012),
  4. Post Graduate Certificate in implementation of International Human Rights Treaties (British Foreign & Commonwealth Chevening Fellowship) from the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom (2007),
  5. Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kanyo School of Government (2003), and
  6. Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree from the University of Nairobi (2001).

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has rushed out at the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for failing to reign on police officers alleged to be involved in abductions of innocent Kenyans.  Waiguru said recent wave of abductions allegedly being undertaken by people suspected to be police officers was giving the government a very bad image and therefore making it hard for leaders supporting the current administration to defend it.  The Governor claimed IPOA had failed in its mission to promote accountability and professionalism in the National Police Service (NPS) by allegedly allowing rogue police officers to continue perpetuating acts of abductions.   “I have said this several times and even the President has called for a stop to these abductions. IPOA must do its work, because you are making our work very difficult to defend the government if abduction becomes the news every day,” she said.  She said the agency must investigate and bring to book, police alleged to be involved in abductions and enforced disappearance of innocent Kenyans so as to arrest the situation.  Read Also Is Babu Owino turning to Sonko?…
