Bomet MP Linet Toto sparks debate in Parliament after kneeling while addressing a male MP

Bomet Woman Representative Linet Toto caused a stir in Parliament when she knelt before Sotik member of parliament (MP) Francis Sigei during a session.

The act unfolded on Tuesday November 19, 2024 as Toto addressed Sigei, leading to heated discussions among lawmakers, with many divided over its appropriateness.

Several female MPs criticized Toto’s gesture, arguing that it undermined the fight for gender equality and the dignity of women in leadership.

The MPs contended that such actions reinforce stereotypes and perpetuate the notion that women should submit to men, even in professional and legislative environments.

However, not everyone shared this perspective.

Suna East MP Junet Mohamed rose to defend Linet Toto, asserting that there was nothing inherently wrong with her actions.

According to Mohamed, Toto’s gesture could be seen as a reflection of her humility and cultural upbringing, which often emphasize respect for elders and leaders.

Junet added that Toto had recently returned from Uganda, where women commonly kneel before men, suggesting she might have adopted the habit there.

“That is the way it should be Mr. Speaker. That’s on a light note Mr Speaker,” Junet said.

When speaking to MP Sigei, Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo asked why MP Toto felt the need to bow in front of him.

“Mr. Speaker my concern is Honourable Toto is kneeling. I know that the member she is speaking to is a very honourable and much older member but is she in order to be kneeling?” Millie Odhiambo questioned.

She struggled to contain her amusement as she said that Toto was not supposed to kneel because all members of the House were equal.

“As much as it shows respect culturally, but it is not in order,” the law maker added.

Junet may be taken seriously, according to Kisii MP Dorice Donya, who also said that husbands of female MPs may expect them to start kneeling when speaking to them.

“You’ll be ruining our marriages Mr Speaker. It is men who should kneel before women not the other way round.

In this 21st century we should not be told of what to do,” Donya said.
