The Elgeyo Marakwet County Government has issued an alert over the expected El Niño rains, warning residents to prepare for possible heavy rainfall, storms and related disasters during the October-November-December (OND) 2026 season.

The county government says the Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast prolonged above-average rainfall across the country, accompanied by storms.

The forecast has raised concerns in Elgeyo Marakwet, particularly in areas that are vulnerable to flooding and landslides. According to the county advisory, the anticipated rains could trigger landslides, mudslides and flooding, potentially putting lives and property at risk.

The county has warned that the effects could include injuries, displacement of families, outbreaks of waterborne and vector-borne diseases, food shortages and malnutrition.

Heavy rains could also block roads and disrupt transport, making it difficult for residents to access essential services.

Families living in areas considered vulnerable have been advised to identify alternative shelters and move to higher and safer grounds once the rains begin.

The county government has also appealed to churches located in safe areas to make their facilities available as rescue centres in case communities are forced to evacuate their homes.

Schools have equally been urged to put in place precautionary measures to guarantee the safety of learners during the rainy season.

Meanwhile, residents living in less vulnerable areas have been encouraged to take advantage of the expected rains by planting short-term crops and growing animal fodder.

The county government is now calling for collaboration among government agencies, communities, schools, churches and other stakeholders to strengthen preparedness and reduce the potential impact of the El Niño rains.

The advisory comes as Elgeyo Marakwet steps up preparedness efforts, with authorities urging residents not to wait for disasters to strike before taking action.
