Carabao: Chelsea ruthlessly put six past Middlesbrough goalkeeper

NewsSportsWORLD

Chelsea is through to the finals of the Carabao Cup after a convincing 6-2 aggregate win against Middlesbrough in the semi-finals played at Stamford Bridge.

With the Blues only sitting in ninth place in the Premier League standings, Mauricio Pochettino has not endured the ideal start to his reign at Stamford Bridge.

The manager has admitted that he wants supporters to “trust” the process after his side stormed into the EFL Cup.

“These types of games are a good experience for young players and it is about now growing and it will help us to compete. We are building a very good team. The mentality is good. We have plenty but we need time.” Said Pochettino.

Chelsea scored four goals in the first half to effectively end the tie as a contest, before two more strikes followed during the closing stages.

As well as an own goal from Jonny Howson, there were goals from Enzo Fernandez, Axel Disasi, Noni Madueke and a double from Cole Palmer, with Morgan Rogers netting a consolation for the visitors.

Middlesbrough had earlier stunned the Blues with a 1-0 win at the Riverside Stadium in the first leg and had genuine ambitions of becoming the first EFL side to eliminate Premier League opposition in the semi-finals since Bradford knocked out Aston Villa 11 years ago.

In mid-table in the Premier League and without European football, the domestic cups have taken on great importance for Chelsea and Pochettino as they bid to demonstrate tangible progress during a transitional season.

Chelsea will now wait to know weather they will Play Liverpool or Fulham in the finals tonight when the two clash at the Carven Cottage with Liverpool already with a goal at hand.
