Gachagua, Sifuna call for opposition unity ahead of 2027 elections

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna have called for unity among opposition leaders in their quest to remove President William Ruto from power, saying personal differences should not stand in the way of rescuing the country.

Speaking during the annual Gema Watho meeting in Thika, the two leaders urged the Mt Kenya community to take time and carefully scrutinise potential political partners before deciding whom to support in the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua cautioned the region against rushing into another political arrangement without proper consultations, accusing the Kenya Kwanza administration of dividing the community, weakening its economic interests and undermining its dignity.

He said Mt Kenya leaders were engaging other opposition formations and would only settle on a political direction after thorough consultations and due diligence.

Sifuna, meanwhile, defended his working relationship with Gachagua despite their past political differences, saying the need to remove Ruto from power was greater than personal disagreements.

The two also condemned abductions and alleged extrajudicial killings, calling for the restoration of the rule of law and constitutionalism. Sifuna challenged lawyers to take an active role in protecting the integrity of the 2027 elections, describing them as the first line of defence against electoral malpractice.

The meeting was attended by Gema Watho chairman Wanjohi Wambugu and Senator John Methu, among other leaders.
