Justin Muturi urges IEBC to clarify the issue of livestreaming elections results

DP party leader Justin Muturi has urged the Ministry of Information, the Media Council of Kenya, political parties and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to convene a meeting at the earliest opportunity to establish a clear, binding and transparent livestreaming protocol for the 2027 General Election.

In a statement dated October 25, 2026, Muturi noted that the 2022 experience at Bomas of Kenya where results of 28 constituencies were not formally announced by Chebukati led to chaos.

According to the DP party leader, the 2022 experience showed how interruptions in the live communication of election results can fuel suspicion, erode public trust and heighten political tensions, adding that Kenya must not repeat this mistake.

“The meeting must deliver enforceable rules guaranteeing public access to electoral information, transparent explanations for any livestreaming disruptions and clear contingency measures for technical failures,” said Muturi.

He added that National security must never be used as a blanket excuse to suppress legitimate journalism or deny Kenyans information of public interest.

“Any restriction must be lawful, necessary and proportionate,” he emphasized.

Muturi emphasized that the time to act is now, not when tensions are already high, adding that Kenyans deserve transparency, accountability and timely access to election information.

“No information vacuum. No arbitrary interruptions. No compromise on electoral transparency,” read part of the statement.
