CS Machogu postpones reopening of schools by one week due to heavy rains

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has postponed the reopening of all primary and secondary schools in the country by one week due to ongoing heavy rains.

The schools, which were supposed to open today (April 29), will now reopen on Monday, May 6 after his Ministry did an assessment of the heavy rains situation in the country.

A statement from the Ministry says that it directed its field officers to submit data from all basic education learning institutions countrywide to assist the government in assessing the readiness of the schools for the second term opening.

The Ministry says that the reports it received from its officers — corroborated with data from other government agencies — showed that a considerate number of schools in various regions had been adversely affected by the rains.

“The devastating effects of the rains in some of the schools is so severe that it will be imprudent to risk the lives of learners and staff before water-tight measures are put in place to ensure adequate safety of all affected school communities,” Machogu says in a statement.
